Roof Before and After • 114th Penny Pinching Party

When we moved into our new house (older, but new to us) back in February, the insurance company took one look at the roof and threatened to drop our coverage if we did not get a new one. Back in May I did a roof color poll HERE to help decide on a color. The majority of you voted for charcoal and I decided that it gave the best contrast with our red brick house. The roofers started in the middle of June, but did not finish until the middle of July (They had said it would take 1-2 weeks). It rained almost every day while we were getting the new roof on and one night it was pouring while the roofers hammered away trying to get some protection on our roof. Luckily we had no leaks and we ended up with a pretty good looking roof. I waited until now to post the after photo, since the trees blocked the view of the roof.
 Before with the shake roof.

After with the charcoal architectural shingles. We also painted the front door navy blue.

The insurance company was right about needing a new roof. Every day I would pick up fallen shingles from the flower beds.

When the roofers removed these shakes we found hundreds of wasp nests.

To save money we did all the clean-up and ended up filling 3 dumpsters.

The house was too big of a project for us to do, but my husband was able to do the shed himself and save a little money there.

Now that the roof is finished, I'm excited to work on more fun projects like creating a smart home!

  1. Your house is so the navy door. Great choice on the roof color, I have a weakness for old brick houses.
    Thanks for hosting every week!

  2. Looks very nice. We just had our done as well and it's amazing how often I look at other roofs now.

  3. Great choice on the roof. Looks fantastic with the brick!

  4. The roof looks great! I keep hoping for a hail storm to get rid of our "old lady pink" roof....very jealous of yours!
I added my tutorial on Canning Jalapeno Pepper Jelly. I thought this might be a great Christmas gift for people who have everything! Or just love food….Hope you enjoy-and thanks again!

  5. Hi Jen, thank you for hosting this party! Your new roof looks great! I'm amazed that the rest of the house looks so updated - I guess the previous owners updated the house (brick looks nice) but not the roof? We moved into ours last year and it's a l-o-n-g work in progress, I say we'll be done in 20yrs! Have a nice week!

  6. Congratulations! You have been given The Versatile Blogger Award over at You can read more about this at

  7. Just what I was looking for - cheers!

  8. The last time I needed a roof repair, I felt so overwhelmed I simply opted to hire professional help from this page. Kudos to you guys for the hard work and labor you exerted for this project!
