93rd Penny Pinching Party - Roof Update

Tuesday, July 5, 2011

We are finally getting our new roof!
As soon as the roofers took the old shakes off it started raining! They are up their now at 10:00 PM trying to nail on the tar paper while it pours rain and lightning flashes all around. I hope that thin paper holds up to the rain. They still have about half the roof to take off before they can start getting the new roof up. Hopefully the color we chose will look good with the house. The old shake roof had hundreds of wasp nests, spider nests, and moss and I am glad to get rid of it. Hopefully I will have a new roof next week so I can post pictures of the color we chose. This isn't really a thrifty post since we are paying to have the roof done, but we are doing the clean-up ourselves which has saved us some money. All of the mess you see in the picture below, was our job to clean-up. It was actually fun working as a family. Hopefully it will still be fun when we clean up the front yard tomorrow.

  1. Wow, that's a lot of cleanup, but cool that you can all do it together. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your progress.

    Have a great week!

  2. Your photo reminds me of a few years back. My husband and I actually did the roofing ourselves. We encountered a torrential downpour with nasty winds, which made mincemeat of our tarps. We just gave up and let mother nature continue with her tantrum. All was well after everything dried out. Some rain damage to our upstairs ceilings but nothing that couldn't be fixed. Good luck with your roof. It will be beautiful when its done. Thanks for hosting a great linky party!!

  3. My DH was going to remove the roof and save even more money, but I decided it was too dangerous. Our roof is very pitched in some spots and very high up. I decided I didn't want my DH risking his life for any amount of money saved. If we were re-roofing a rambler we would totally save that money and do it ourselves. Sometimes being thrifty means spending money and staying out of the hospital, LOL.

  4. My husband and I replaced the roof on our house about five years ago, and it is definitely something we do not care to repeat. Very proud to be able to say we did it, but once is enough for us. Can't say you missed out on anything other than boasting rights by having some one else do the work.I would instead tell you made the right choice.
